Setting New Year’s Goals for Couples
Strengthening Your Relationship in 2025!
As the New Year begins, it’s a great time for couples to reflect on their relationship and set meaningful goals together. Starting the year as a team will have benefits through the year.
Below are some suggestions for some concrete goals couples can work towards this year. These are examples of goals I work with couples on in couples therapy. You don't have to wait for a couples therapist to assign this to get started. You can start the new year off with the intention of creating a stronger relationship using these as a template for discussion.
1. Improve and Enhance Communication:
Enhance how you express yourselves and listen to each other. Set a regular time to talk openly. I suggest couples find 15 minutes a day to have uninterrupted time to talk. With the busy live we lead it is harder than it sounds to find 15 minutes a day. Once you commit and start feeling the benefits of this daily connection time it will become as a much a priority as any of the other scheduled activities you have!
2. Engage in Shared Activities Plan new activities together, such as cooking classes or date nights. Engaging in fun experiences helps strengthen your bond. I suggest that couples take turns planning date nights for each other every other week. Alternatively, some couples like to sit down once a month and plan date nights together. Whatever strategy you choose, the important part is that you're prioritizing experiencing new and fun things together.
3. Discuss ways you can focus on improving how you resolve conflict. Cultivating empathy and focusing on understanding each other's perspectives by asking questions and validating each other's emotions takes practice and work. Couples therapy can provide strategies for this. You can also discuss finding books or podcasts that the two of you can listen to or read together. 7. Foster intimacy. Prioritize both emotional and physical intimacy. Make time for deeper conversations and for time to express physical and sexual connection.
Setting focused goals this New Year can lead to deeper connections in your relationship. Couples therapy provides a space to explore these goals as you work together toward a fulfilling partnership. Here’s to a year of love and growth!
